How long does it take to grow a beard?
If you are growing your beard, then hurray! However, you may be wondering how long it takes to grow out. The short answer is about two to four months, but its length and quality depend on many other factors that we would like to tell you about in the following paragraphs.

Beard hair normally grows at a rate of ½ inch per month, but there are men who can grow a full inch in one month. Yes, genetics play a very important role when it comes to the length and thickness of your facial hair. In fact, some people need an entire year to achieve full beard status!

If you don’t trim your beard, it can grow up to three feet in length, but it depends on your genes if you can look like Dumbledore someday (you know, the wizard in Harry Potter that has a beard that goes all the way to the bottom part of his chest).

How do I know how long my beard can grow?

Beard growth can be determined if you watch for the shedding of the hair. When you notice that your beard has begun to shed it means that you have entered what is known as the third phase of hair growth.

There are a total of three phases, and you can read in Grow Gorgeous more about them. The first phase is the Anagen phase where the hairs grow. “The cells in the hair bulb divide rapidly creating new hair growth. Hair actively grows from the roots for an average of 2-7 years before hair follicles become dormant,” they explain.

Then, there is the Catagen phase, which lasts about two to three weeks on average. Hair stops growing and detaches itself from the blood supply. Finally, the Telogen phase is the final stage of hair growth. It begins with a resting period where “where club hairs rest in the root while new hair begins to grow beneath it. This phase lasts for around 3 months”, the website wrote.

After this occurs, the resting club hairs will fall out, allowing new hair to come through the hair follicle. “Each follicle is independent and goes through the growth cycle at different times so you don’t lose patches of hair all at once and only shed 50-100 hairs each day. Meanwhile, the other 80-90% of your hair will be in the Anagen phase, growing long and strong!”, Grow Gorgeous explains.

So, going back to your beard growth, by monitoring this process on yourself, you will be able to know how long it takes for you to grow a long beard and how long it can get. Nonetheless, take into consideration that not every hair in the beard will enter the final phase at the same time. In other words, some hair will stop growing at a foot length while others can push on to three feet or longer.

Which factors affect my beard length?

How to grow a healthy beard and also a long beard at the same time? There are several factors to take into consideration if you will be able to have a long beard or note.

1.    Your genetics

Have your father or your grandfather grown a full beard before? If the answer is positive, then it is very probable that you will also be able to grow a full beard. But, if neither your father nor grandfather or anyone in your family has had a great beard, genetics are not on your side.

But not everything is bad news. According to experts, men who struggle to grow facial hair are less likely to lose the hair on their heads. It is an irony, we know, but if you don’t have much of a beard, you are probably not going to go bald.

2.    Age

Your first facial hair will start to come out when you get to puberty, which is between 12 and 16. Your testosterone levels increase. However, you still have to wait a while until this hair is thick enough to become a full beard.

Then, men between 18 and 25 will notice a boom in beard growth. They will see that it grows quicker, fuller and thicker because this is the age where they have the highest testosterone levels.

It is not until you reach between 25 and 35 years that your beard gets the thickest it will ever be, and also the fastest it will grow. In other words, the beard is at its full potential.

3.    Race is an important factor

Yes, the factor that is the most significant when it comes to beard growth is your race. It will determine whether your beard will begin to grow when you are a teenager or when you are an adult.

Caucasians have, usually, the thickest beard, which is the opposite for the African race, who struggle the most with facial hair growth. But, there are exceptions, black men who can grow beards develop thick ones. Asians can develop a beard but it is not usually a full beard.

4.    Stress

Another factor that impacts beard growth is stress levels. If it is high, it will not grow fast. In addition, a poor immune system will also affect the possibility of having a healthy beard. Therefore, managing your stress is an important part of beard care.

5.    Skin care

The skin beneath your beard is very important because if it’s taken care of and healthy, the hair that grows there will also be. Beard care products can help clean your facial hair but also the skin underneath and stimulate growth. Take a look at some of the best beard products we advise you to have.

6.    Smoking

Smoking can affect your health in many ways, and your beard growth process is not an exception. It can cause hair loss, which is not a positive thing if you are trying to grow your beard. Therefore, we advise you to quit the habit to see better results.

7.    Testosterone levels

We have written about this before on our blog because it is a very important factor when it comes to beard growth. It is the vital male hormone that controls red blood cells, fat distribution, fertility and muscle mass. It influences whether your beard hair is healthy or not and determines if you have a chance of growing a longer and thicker beard.
